What is Bee Venom?

Worker bees produce bee venom in their venom glands to defend themselves against dangers and then store it in the venom bag. Bee venom (also called apitoxin) acts after the needle's insertion in the puncture site through a channel directly connected to the venom bag where it is stored.

Newborn bees have weak venom production rates, and they reach their highest production capacity when they are 12 days old. Then they lose their ability to produce venom after reaching 20 days. An adult bee can produce between 0.15 and 0.3 milligrams of venom in total.

Bee Venom is a complex mixture of proteins, amino acids, enzymes, sugars, and lipids. Melittin, a polypeptide is a major component of venom, and in humans it has the effect of stimulating the adrenal cortex (part of the adrenal gland) to release cortisol, a hormone associated with many benefits. Bee venom as a cosmetic ingredient is useful as a topical agent for promoting skin regeneration or repairing certain epidermal conditions.

How to test Bee Venom Allergy?

If you have an allergy to bee stings, you may have an allergic reaction to bee venom skincare products. Skin with open wounds is more likely to show allergic reaction because of the bloodstream. If you have healthy skin, the chance of developing an allergic reaction is low, even if you have an allergy to a bee sting.

We would recommend doing a test before using the product in such cases. Here are the three types of tests:

Allergic Reactions Test: apply to the side of your neck. Skin around this area is the thinnest so more reactive.

Pore Clogging Test: apply to the chin or T Zone.

Skin Irritation Test: Test wherever you feel you are more sensitive. For most people this is between your brows, on your cheeks or around your mouth.

If your skin is bumpy, itchy, or painful, stop using the product. If you see a reaction, wash the area with water and the gentle cleanser and follow up with a basic moisturizer.
